3,837 people were brought to criminal liability in the first half of 2024 for corruption crimes in Uzbekistan, which is 5.5% more than in January-June 2023 (3,637), the press service of the Anti-Corruption Agency said. In particular:

  • 146 officials were convicted of corruption crimes in banks (versus 186 in the first half of 2023);
  • in the Ministry of Health - 145 (177);
  • in law enforcement agencies - 122 (128);
  • in the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Innovation - 52 (64);
  • in the Ministry of Employment and Poverty Reduction - 30 (40);
  • in the Ministry of Agriculture - 30 (33).

However, in some departments, there is an increase in the number of corruption crimes. Thus, 285 cases (237) were recorded in the system of the Ministry of Preschool and School Education, 133 (119) in local khokimiyats, and 153 (103) in enterprises with state shares.

The press service of the Anti-Corruption Agency said that not all of the 3,837 convicted are officials. Statistics on them will be presented later.

Earlier in 2023, 3,575 officials were brought to criminal liability, which is 14.7% more than the year before. The main type of crime, leading by a wide margin, is theft of property. The number of republican officials convicted is 55% less than in 2022.

In Uzbekistan, 566 persons convicted of corruption were re-hired and committed such crimes again. The head of the Anti-Corruption Agency previously stated that by the end of September it is planned to submit for consideration a bill on the introduction of a register of corrupt officials, which has been discussed since 2021.
