President Shavkat Mirziyoyev has given directives officials to lift 230,000 families out of poverty by the end of 2026.
Speaking today at the government meeting devoted to advancing efforts to reduce poverty and raise household incomes, the president stressed that regional and district governors must run their task forces effectively and make full use of the new opportunities available to them.
Officials committed to placing 350,000 people in permanent jobs and raising the incomes of a further 1 million people between September and December. The meeting concluded that a clear mechanism and action plan must be drawn up for each area of work, with designated officials responsible at the neighborhood level. Drawing on China's experience, officials were also tasked with developing detailed guidelines for staff who work directly with residents at the district and neighborhood level.
The meeting heard that the national poverty rate had fallen to 5.8 percent at the start of the year, with roughly 2.2 million people classified as being in need. That number has since dropped to 1.5 million.
Mirziyoyev said the results achieved by officials tasked with turning neighborhoods into areas free of unemployment and poverty were still insufficient, and criticized some regional leaders for lacking either the expertise or the persistence needed to get people into work.
Uzbekistan will deploy a new system for tackling poverty nationwide, under which governors will be required to devote three days a week to poverty-reduction and employment issues. A separate program will also be launched to help parents caring for children find paid work from home or within their own neighborhoods.
