The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has released the results of its PISA 2025 international assessment, revealing significant academic gains for Uzbekistan in its second time participating in the study.
According to the Ministry of Preschool and School Education, a randomly selected sample of 8,652 fifteen-year-old students across 233 schools nationwide represented Uzbekistan in the global evaluation.
In science—the primary focus of the PISA 2025 cycle—Uzbek students scored 438 points, ranking 48th out of 91 participating countries and educational systems. This marks a sharp improvement from PISA 2022, where the country ranked 80th with a score of 355 points. The year-over-year surge represents a substantial 83-point increase in science proficiency. Additionally, Uzbekistan placed 72nd in the "learning in a digital world" metric, securing a score of 402.4 points. Further data analysis is currently underway for the assessment's secondary domains, mathematics and reading literacy.
The evaluation considers Level 2 as the baseline proficiency threshold, which measures a student's capacity to apply foundational knowledge and skills to real-world, everyday scenarios. Uzbekistan saw a dramatic shift in this category: the share of students achieving or exceeding this baseline level skyrocketed from 19% in 2022 to 65% in 2025, marking a 46-percentage-point increase.
Conducted every three years by the OECD, the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) measures how effectively 15-year-olds can apply their classroom knowledge to practical, real-world situations. The PISA 2025 cycle evaluated education systems across 91 countries and territories worldwide.
