The MPs of the Legislative Chamber at the meeting today passed the Accession of the Republic of Uzbekistan to the Vienna Convention on Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage (Vienna, May 21, 1963) Bill.
The Bill was passed after two readings and has now been sent to the Senate for approval.
The accession to the convention will result in the rules governing the civil liability regime for damage caused at nuclear facilities, the procedure, terms and principles for compensating for such damage applying to Uzbekistan.
According to the convention, in the event of a nuclear disaster, the people of Uzbekistan will be paid compensation.
Accession to the Vienna Convention will ensure the application of internationally recognized legal mechanisms for compensation for damage, strengthen the protection of victims, clearly define the obligations of nuclear facility operators and create reliable financial guarantees to indemnify the possible damage.
As the MPs underscored, this will boost confidence in the national nuclear safety system. In addition, this will strengthen international cooperation and ensure compliance with nuclear liability standards.
