The Government of Uzbekistan today transferred 265 tons of humanitarian to the people of Afghanistan in connection with the devastating earthquake, the press service of the Foreign Ministry said.

The hand-over ceremony of transferring the cargo took place on September 6 in the city of Hairaton in Balkh Province. The cargo, including medicines and food goods, was formed at the Termez Cargo Centre and delivered to Hairaton on 14 trucks.

The ceremony began with the reading of verses from the Koran. On behalf of the leadership of Balkh Province, the head of the secretariat F. Rabie expressed gratitude to the President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev, emphasizing that the leader of Uzbekistan and the people of the country invariably stood shoulder to shoulder with the Afghan people during all difficult periods. F. Rabie noted that this support is a manifestation of true brotherhood, which the Afghan people and their leadership will never forget, the report says.

The Deputy Governor M. Idris said that the humanitarian aid would be delivered to the provinces where aid was most needed and given to families in need. The earthquake had the most impact on the eastern provinces, primarily Kunar and Nangarhar, as well as Laghman, Nuristan and some areas of Panjshir.

“Representatives of Afghanistan emphasized that aid from Uzbekistan is not just medicine and food. It is a manifestation of solidarity and humanity, a signal that even in the most difficult days there is a friend and neighbor ready to support. Words were heard that the Uzbek people showed mercy and generosity of spirit, which will forever remain in the memory of Afghans,” the Uzbek Foreign Ministry noted.

The Uzbek authorities was represented by the Special Envoy of the President of Uzbekistan for Afghanistan Ismatulla Irgashev and the governor of the Surkhandarya province Ulugbek Kosimov.

They noted that assistance to the neighboring country reflects the president’s course on strengthening good-neighborly relations, developing a spirit of solidarity and supporting the Afghan people.
