Deputy mayor of Markhamat district of Andijan province was detained while receiving $15,000, the State Security Service (SSS) said.

According to the case file, in exchange for this sum, he promised to close 400 meters of a drainage canal along a road running through the district and, through high-ranking acquaintances, arrange documents for the resulting 60-ha land plot for construction of eight stores, each measuring 30 sqm.

He first took $200 upfront and was detained red-handedly while receiving $14,800 by officers of the SSS and the Department for Combating Economic Crimes under the Prosecutor General's Office.

A criminal case has been opened against the official under clauses "a" and "c" of Part 3 of the Article 168 (Fraud committed on a large scale using one's official position), as well as the clause "b" of Part 2 of Article 211 (Giving a large bribe) through Article 28 (Types of accomplices to a crime—perpetrator, organizer, instigator, or accomplice) of the Criminal Code, with the man taken into custody and investigation underway.
