Today, Air Asia X marked the launch of its first Tashkent to Kuala Lumpur direct flight, opening a new, affordable and convenient air service between Central Asia and Southeast Asia's most attractive destinations.
The new route will allow travelers from Uzbekistan to enjoy tropical islands, lush jungles, and renowned culinary culture ahead of Visit Malaysia Year 2026—a major national campaign showcasing the country's rich cultural heritage, natural beauty, and tourism opportunities. Passengers will also benefit from convenient AirAsia Fly-Thru connections via Kuala Lumpur, giving them access to more than 130 destinations in ASEAN countries, as well as Japan, Korea, Australia, and other regions.
According to the MasterCard-CrescentRating Global Muslim Travel Index (GMTI) 2025, Malaysia retained its title as the world's most Muslim-friendly travel destination for the tenth consecutive year. Furthermore, Malaysia was recognized as a leading halal culinary destination at the Halal in Travel Awards 2025, further confirming its reputation for offering a unique diversity of travel experiences.
As part of the new flight launch, AirAsia X and the State Committee for Tourism Development of Uzbekistan signed a Memorandum of Understanding to promote bilateral tourism and strengthen the partnership between the two countries through joint marketing initiatives, programs to expand cooperation, and cultural exchange.
Datuk Kamarudin bin Meranun, co-founder of AirAsia and Independent Executive Chairman of the Capital A Group, underscored: "This historic step symbolizes a bridge that brings Malaysia and Uzbekistan closer together. By expanding its presence in Central Asia, AirAsia X proudly supports Malaysia's tourism agenda in the lead-up to Visit Malaysia Year 2026. This milestone underscores Malaysia's growing role in strengthening regional connections and reflects our shared commitment to developing new routes that promote affordable travel, economic growth, and cultural exchange."
Benjamin Ismail, CEO of AirAsia X, stated: "AirAsia X has always been committed to expanding our long-haul network, making travel more accessible and benefiting the communities and economies of Central and Southeast Asia. This year alone, we carried over 80,000 passengers between the two regions. Kuala Lumpur is recognized as the world's largest low-cost air travel hub by think tank OAG, allowing thousands of travelers to easily connect to over 130 destinations through our Fly-Thru network. The new route complements Malaysia's tourism agenda in advance of Visit Malaysia Year 2026, boosting inbound tourism and cementing the country's status as ASEAN's premier gateway to new regions.
His Excellency Ilham Tua bin Illias, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Malaysia to Uzbekistan, emphasized: "The tropical heart of Southeast Asia and the historic crossroads of Central Asia—Malaysia and Uzbekistan—have become closer than ever. With the launch of AirAsia X's inaugural flight between Kuala Lumpur and Tashkent, we are opening a new chapter in our relationship and cooperation, while maintaining a sense of mutual affinity. United by shared values of hospitality, respect, and cultural pride, our countries embody diversity in their own unique ways. Malaysia, with its modern culture, vibrant charm, and pristine beaches; Uzbekistan, with the enduring spirit of the Great Silk Road, rich heritage, and great thinkers. Together, we are opening the way to bringing our peoples closer together, strengthening friendship, and building a bright future in the spirit of mutual discovery and cooperation."
