Due to the holding of the 43rd session of the UNESCO General Conference, roads entering Samarkand will be closed from October 30 to November 14, the Interior Ministry said.
Diversion routes have been established for transit vehicles. Drivers will be given flyers with QR codes linking to diversion maps.
The Interior Ministry urged residents and visitors to postpone road trips to Samarkand if possible if they were scheduled for these dates.
For the first time since 1985, a session of the UNESCO General Conference will be held outside Paris, where the organization is headquartered. The event will be hosted by the Silk Road Samarkand tourist complex.
The General Conference, which meets every two years, determines the direction, budget, and overall activities of UNESCO—the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization. The General Conference also elects members of the Executive Board and appoints the Director-General of UNESCO every four years.
