In Pakhtachi district of Samarkand province, four children have tragically lost their lives after drowning. The incident was officially disclosed by the press service of the Ministry of Emergency Situations.
According to authorities, on May 31, the driver of a cargo electric moped lost control of the vehicle, plunging into the Narpay canal which flows through Ukrach neighborhood. There were eight passengers on board at the time.
Local residents managed to rescue four of them from the fast-flowing water. However, search and rescue operations by emergency personnel and local volunteers which followed confirmed that the remaining four passengers had perished. Their bodies have since been recovered from the canal.
A preliminary inquiry revealed that the driver, a local resident born in 1984, had loaded his cargo moped with a total of eight people - his wife and six minor children from his own and a neighbor's household—to take them out for a recreational ride.
The Ministry of Emergency Situations specified that the victims of the tragedy were young children aged 3, 6, 9, and 10. Neighborhood volunteers scoured the canal throughout the night; three of the bodies were recovered on the day of the accident, while the fourth was found on the morning of June 1. Two of the deceased children belonged to the driver, while the other two were from the neighboring family.
A joint investigation is currently underway by Pakhtachi District Prosecutor's Office, the District police department, and the Emergency Situations Department to determine the exact cause of the accident.
