Uzbekistan has proposed implementing vehicle confiscation as a penalty for aggressive driving and road traffic related damage, the chief of the Road Safety Service (RSS), Sherzod Ibragimov told the Uzbekistan 24 TV channel.
To curb traffic accidents, an interagency working group developed a comprehensive set of proposals aimed at tightening penalties for traffic violations. These measures have already been presented to President Shavkat Mirziyoyev.
"Currently, instances of citizens allowing underage children to drive vehicles are driving up the number of fatal and injury-causing road accidents. Furthermore, illegal street racing is being organized on public roads, especially within populated areas, posing a severe threat to traffic safety," the RSS chief emphasized.
In light of this, authorities have proposed adding the temporary impoundment of vehicles to the list of administrative penalties for five specific types of egregious traffic violations.
The proposals also include establishing distinct administrative liabilities for letting a minor take the wheel, as well as for organizing or participating in illegal street racing.
"Furthermore, we propose applying an additional penalty—either vehicle confiscation or temporary impoundment—against unlicensed or previously disqualified drivers who commit road hooliganism. We also intend to mandate a strict 15-day administrative arrest for driving under the influence of alcohol. Finally, violators who commit gross traffic offenses will be barred from using early-payment discount windows for their fines for a period of one year," Ibragimov continued.
