President Shavkat Mirziyoyev has sent a congratulatory message to Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan following the victory of his Civil Contract party in the parliamentary elections. The Armenian Prime Minister's press service announced the news on June 12.
In his message, the Uzbek President noted that the election results serve as "tangible proof of the Armenian people's high level of trust" in Nikol Pashinyan’s domestic and foreign policies, including his efforts to ensure peace and prosperity in the South Caucasus.
"I am confident that through our joint efforts, we will succeed in further expanding our mutually beneficial cooperation in the future," the message reads.
The parliamentary elections in Armenia took place on June 7. According to the Central Electoral Commission, the Civil Contract party of incumbent Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan won the election, securing 49.81% of the vote. The opposition bloc Strong Armenia, led by Russian billionaire of Armenian descent Samvel Karapetyan, came in second with 23.29%. Former President Robert Kocharyan's Armenia bloc received 9.94%, while the Prosperous Armenia party garnered 4%.
The vote took place against the backdrop of strained relations between Armenia and Russia. On May 29, the leaders of Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Russia urged Armenia to hold a referendum on whether the country should remain in the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) or continue pursuing European Union membership. The Russian President also warned Yerevan of severe economic consequences should it choose to exit the EAEU.
