In a new anti-graft initiative, civil servants in Uzbekistan are being taken on "preventative visits" to correctional facilities and detention centers to experience firsthand the severe consequences of corruption.

The project was launched by the Anti-Corruption Agency of Uzbekistan in partnership with the Ministry of Internal Affairs, according to the agency's press service. The initiative is part of a 2026 action plan approved by the National Anti-Corruption Council.

The first group to participate included executives and staff from the Ministry of Construction and Housing and Communal Economy, the Ministry of Poverty Alleviation and Employment, and the Cadastre Agency.

During the visit, officials were given an up-close look at interrogation rooms, holding cells, and other prison facilities. They also spoke directly with inmates serving sentences for corruption-related crimes, the statement noted.

"Real-life examples were shared illustrating how the illicit decisions these individuals made shattered not only their own lives, but also deeply impacted their families, children, careers, and standing in society," the Agency stated.

"The primary objective of these visits is to show public servants the grim reality of corruption offenses, to instill a clear understanding that legal consequences are inevitable, and to reinforce that official powers must be used strictly for the benefit of the people and the state. Ultimately, this builds a stronger commitment to integrity and the rule of law," the Agency explained.

The program plans to systematically expand these visits to leadership figures from other ministries, as well as personnel working in high-risk sectors. To ensure transparency, representatives from the media and non-governmental organizations will also be invited to observe the process.
