A traveler bound for a neighboring country was apprehended at Dustlik border customs post in the Andijan province after attempting to smuggle $35,600 inside his traditional skullcap (doppi). The foreign currency, which had not been declared, was seized in accordance with procedural guidelines.

The incident was intercepted by the Andijan Province Customs Department at Dustlik checkpoint.

According to officials, the 51-year-old citizen tried to leave the country while concealing the $35,600 stash directly under his skullcap. During routine customs screening, officers reviewed the passenger’s declaration form and conducted an oral interrogation. This led to the discovery of the undeclared cash, which was promptly confiscated as evidence.

The Customs Committee reminds travelers that under current legislation, residents of Uzbekistan are legally permitted to export cash foreign currency up to an equivalent of 100 million soums without restrictions.

A formal customs investigation into the smuggling attempt is currently underway.
