Uzbekistan has further strengthened its system for protecting women who suffer from harassment and violence. A new law introduces a series of amendments aimed at defending victims' rights in court, providing them with social support, and ensuring that children's best interests come first.

Law No.-1156, adopted on July 1, 2026, introduces amendments and additions to several pieces of legislation.

Under the new law, the concept of the "best interests of the child" has been enshrined in national legislation, along with guarantees for upholding it. This concept encompasses the child's upbringing within a family environment, safety, health, education, all-around development, personal inviolability, honor and dignity, as well as other interests determined with due regard for the child's own views.

The law also grants organizations within the National Agency for Social Protection system—including Women's Rehabilitation and Adaptation Centers—the authority to file lawsuits in court on behalf of victims of harassment and violence, free of the standard state duty, and to represent them as their legal representatives during court proceedings.

Another significant innovation has been introduced as well. Now, if a victim of harassment or violence is placed in a specialized center, this fact alone serves as grounds for issuing them a temporary sick leave certificate for up to one month.

The law took effect on the date of its official publication.
