Tashkent is proposing to build a new type of school that would double the number of available student places, the President Shavkat Mirziyoyev announced at a government meeting on July 4.

According to official data, some schools in the Sergeli district are operating at 1.5 to 2 times their designed capacity.

In response, a project has been proposed to build a new generation of schools. Under this new approach, gyms, cafeterias, and workshops would be located in the basement, freeing up the upper floors for classrooms.

This year, officials have been instructed to roll out this approach in one school and one kindergarten in every district of Tashkent, establishing what's being called a "capital-city model."

To help create a cooler microclimate for residents and visitors, work is set to begin on 12 artificial lakes in the capital. Three of them will be built in Sergeli — in the Kushkurgan, Sultanabad, and Farog'atli mahallas — covering a combined area of 22 hectares.

The goal is to turn these lakes into spaces that help moderate the capital's climate while also serving as places for walks and leisure.

The meeting also addressed the creation of a "capital-city model" for ensuring safety in mahallas. Officials noted that assigning national-level officials to oversee Tashkent's districts is already producing results.

Over the past six months, the number of preventable crimes in the capital has declined. No crimes were committed in 230 mahallas, while 332 mahallas saw a sharp drop in crime.

The number of mahallas with concerning crime rates fell from 60 to 23. The Presidential Administration noted that this reflects the effectiveness of the new approach to public safety.
