The government has approved a new regulation outlining the procedures for voluntarily surrendering unregistered weapons, ammunition, core firearm components, explosives, and detonators to internal affairs bodies, as well as the system for rewarding those who do so.
According to the regulation, individuals or corporate executives are officially considered to have voluntarily surrendered these items if they choose to do so independently and notify the police either in writing or verbally.
Applicants must report to their local police department. Prior to submission, firearms must be disassembled and unloaded. Additionally, all weapons, ammunition, and core components must be securely packaged to keep them out of public view.
A provincial technical commission will review each case and make one of the following decisions:
- Approve or deny a monetary reward.
- Grant or deny preferential rights to legally acquire a firearm and ammunition.
Monetary rewards for voluntarily surrendered items will be authorized by executive order from the Minister of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Karakalpakstan, or the heads of the Main Departments of Internal Affairs of Tashkent City, Tashkent Region, and other provincial internal affairs departments.
As a reminder, under current legislation, individuals who voluntarily surrender firearms, ammunition, or explosives to law enforcement agencies are fully exempt from criminal liability.
