President Shavkat Mirziyoyev today hosted Rustam Emomali, chairman of the upper house of Tajikistan’s parliament, the Majlisi Milli, who is on an official visit, the president’s press service said.
The two sides discussed deepening relations, including between their parliaments. They noted growth in mutual trade and freight volumes, and successful cooperation projects in industry, construction, energy, agriculture and electrical engineering.
“Particular attention was paid to raising the role of legislative bodies in advancing agreements reached at the highest level and joint initiatives by stepping up the work of interparliamentary commissions, friendship groups and specialized committees,” the press service said.
It said the sides also stressed the importance of encouraging direct contacts between the capitals and provinces, and of expanding cultural, humanitarian, educational and tourism exchanges.
At the end of the meeting, Mirziyoyev awarded Emomali the Fidokorona Xizmatlari Uchun (For Selfless Service) order, a high state award. The press service said it was for his major contribution to strengthening strategic partnership and alliance between the two countries and for his work in expanding interparliamentary dialogue.
Emomali is the son of Tajikistan’s President Emomali Rahmon, 74, and has long been seen as the likely successor to his father, who has led Tajikistan for more than three decades. He has chaired the upper house since 2020, a post that would, under the constitution, put him in charge of the country if the president died or became incapacitated. He previously served as mayor of Dushanbe. The reception comes amid persistent speculation about when, rather than whether, a handover of power might take place.
