For the first time in history, Uzbekistan was unanimously elected to the UN Statistical Commission for 2026-2029. The electing took place on April 22 during the meeting of commission members in New York, the press service of the National Statistics Committee said.

The UN Statistical Commission was founded in 1947 as a body of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). This is the main intergovernmental institution that determines the areas of development of international statistics. The Commission coordinates the development and implementation of universal statistical standards and methodological principles. It consists of 24 member states elected for four years, taking into account geographical distribution.

Reportedly, becoming a full member of the Statistical Commission opens up broad opportunities for Uzbekistan to participate in the formation of global statistical policy, demonstrate national experience and achievements of reforms, study advanced foreign experience and strengthen international cooperation.

The chairman of the committee, Bekhzod Khamrayev, met with the director of the UN Statistics Division, Stefan Schweinfest, in New York. They discussed the ways to improve the statistical system of Uzbekistan, including the transformation of the committee, harmonization of the methodology with the principles and recommendations of international organizations and the improvement of the qualifications of the staff. The issues of organizing the population and agricultural censuses were also touched upon.
