As it was reported earlier, a military shell exploded at a scrap metal collection point in the Khorezm province, killing one person Friday.
Law enforcement officers and sappers arrived at the scene after the explosion and found about 30 shells. The military attorney's office is investigating the situation, and the servicemen who had allegedly sold the shell to scrap metal collectors were reportedly arrested. According to the source, the shells were purchased from servicemen in the Amu Darya province of Karakalpakstan, but the Ministry of Defense denied the involvement of servicemen.
However, the press service of the Ministry of Defense said that the shell was dug up by local shepherds on territory not under the department's jurisdiction and was taken to the scrap metal collection point. In such situations, the public Is requested to immediately report it to law enforcement agencies, abiding by safety rules.
The servicemen have nothing to do with the incident and have not been prosecuted. The specified type of projectile was used in the 1970s, the statement said.
The ministry called on the media and bloggers "not to report misleading information" and reminded them of the liability for disseminating unfounded and fake news reports.
