President’s spokesman Sherzod Asadov emphasized the importance of maintaining an environment in society where the work of journalists is respected and where the honesty and openness are valued, he said in a statement on the occasion of the World Press Freedom Day, May 3.
Sherzod Asadov called freedom of speech and press "the cornerstones of democracy" and noted that "in Uzbekistan, under the leadership of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, ensuring freedom of expression, the right to receive and disseminate information is an important and integral part of our development strategy."
"This strategy is aimed at protecting human interests, building an open and fair society where the state serves the people," he emphasized.
"We will be pursuing the path of strengthening democratic institutions, and this is despite growing global challenges. In the context of political and economic upheavals, escalating conflicts and increasing disinformation in the world, Uzbekistan remains committed to facilitating the development of journalism, honest dialogue and pluralism of opinions," he added.
"It is regrettable to admit that today, even in countries traditionally considered strongholds of democracy, the idea of freedom of speech often comes under pressure from political, business or ideological interests. More and more often, we are witnessing how open journalism is being replaced by biased rhetoric, and the principle of "freedom of speech" is losing its true value," said Sherzod Asadov.
In his opinion, it is all the more important "to preserve and develop in our society an environment where the professional work of a journalist is respected, where facts and honesty are valued, where dialogue is based on openness."
The presidential spokesman expressed "deep gratitude to journalists, bloggers, editors, cameramen, technical specialists - everyone who daily serves the cause of education, information and objective coverage of events."
"Thank you for your responsibility, courage and dedication to the profession. We wish you new achievements, good health and creative inspiration!” noted Sherzod Asadov.
