A Romanian-French poetry evening dedicated to the poet Gherasim Luca took place in Tashkent on Wednesday, March 25, 2026. Gherasim Luca was born in Bucharest, Romania, in 1914 and died in Paris in 1994. He was one of the central figures of the surrealist movement in Romania, later moving to France.
The event was organized by the Alliance Française de Tashkent in partnership with the Embassy of Romania in Uzbekistan as part of the International Francophonie Day celebrations.
In his remarks, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Romania to Uzbekistan Daniel Cristian Ciobanu expressed his satisfaction with hosting such a remarkable cultural event in Tashkent. The Ambassador emphasized that Romania sees great potential for cooperation with Uzbekistan.
The Vice President of the Alliance Française de Tashkent, Mr. Adrien Huguet, spoke in detail about the work of the poet Gherasim Luca and conducted a poetry masterclass.
Cooperation between Romania and Uzbekistan has been developing very successfully in recent years. Romania places great emphasis on developing cultural relations with Uzbekistan, including literature, as a link that can best bring our peoples closer together. In January 2025, the Alisher Navoi National Library hosted a vibrant poetry evening dedicated to the Romanian poet Mihai Eminescu and the opening of the exhibition "Romanian Writers in the Photo Studios of Their Time." These events were timed to coincide with Romanian National Culture Day, celebrated annually on January 15.
The event, part of the Francophonie celebrations, was attended by poetry and art lovers, young people, and students.
