Smart AI-powered cameras have been erected at 10 pedestrian crossings in Tashkent. This was reported to Gazeta by Zoyir Yuldashev, the spokesman to the Road Safety department said.
Drivers who fail to give way to pedestrians at unregulated crossings will be fined based on recordings from these cameras.
Over 1,700 such violations have already been recorded in the three days since the devices were launched.
Reportedly, such cameras will be installed at 30 more intersections in Tashkent city in the coming days.
1,189 people were injured and 91 died in road accidents in Tashkent in 2024. Most of the accidents — 720 — involved pedestrians.
At a recent government meeting on improving road safety, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev announced the launch of the national Safe Road program. The Safe Road and Safe Pedestrian fund will receive 25% of fines for violations recorded by photo and video radars. These funds will be used to improve accident-prone sections of roads, for installing dividers, pedestrian crossings, lighting and traffic lights. Residents will be able to suggest places where such improvements are needed online, through a special portal.
