Construction of Sultanhovuz Reservoir will commence in 2026 in Bayavut District of Syrdarya province, announced the president Shavkat Mirziyoyev during a visit to the province Thursday.
He emphasized that the reservoir's construction is necessary to improve water supply to agricultural lands.
The reservoir, with a capacity of 100 million cubic meters, is expected to enable twice-yearly harvests on 110,000 hectares of land in Bayavut, Gulistan, Saykhunabad, Syrdarya, and Mirzaabad districts.
Furthermore, the session set the goal to gradually clean 16,000 kilometers of drainage canals in the province.
The president underscored that approximately 200,000 hectares of arable land in the province were subject to severe and moderate salinization. He ordered a pilot project to rehabilitate saline lands and, based on its results, develop a three-year program to improve the reclamation status of the lands.
Shavkat Mirziyoyev also emphasized to officials the need to transform the Syr Darya into a model province for water metering.
Sultanhovuz Lake
Filled primarily by groundwater, the Sultanhovuz lake is 5 km long and has an average depth of 2-3 meters.
The lake's water volume fluctuates seasonally. People living in the neighbourhood near the lake use reeds harvested from the lake to build houses and roofs, and they graze cattle and horses in the wetlands and pastures.
