President Shavkat Mirziyoyev held a meeting on the economic and social development of Tashkent city Tuesday, the president’s spokesman said.

Shavkat Mirziyoyev underscored achievements over the past nine years. More than $20 billion in foreign direct investment has been attracted, and approximately 5,000 major projects have been implemented, with per capita foreign direct investment rising from $71 in 2017 to $2,200.

Retail space in the city has increased 14-fold, reaching 67 million square meters, and the number of entrepreneurs has approached 140,000. More than 3,000 24-hour businesses operate, forming the basis of the "night economy."

Residents themselves say they have underscored positive changes in Tashkent based on the City for Pedestrians principle. One thousand modern electric buses have been received, with 168 new routes launched. An additional 33 kilometers of metro lines and 21 new stations have been erected, Shavkat Mirziyoyev stated. Tashkent's permanent population is expected to increase by an average of 100,000 people per year and reach 3.5 million by 2030. By then, the city's gross regional product (GRP) is expected to reach $52 billion, and household incomes will almost double to $15,000 per year, or $1,250 per month.

He underscored that to achieve these goals, the mayor and his deputies, as well as the mayors of 12 districts, must work tirelessly to review the city's housing stock, transportation, energy, education, healthcare, and service infrastructure in line with the standards of modern megacities.

Tashkent must be transformed into a center of finance, advanced technology, culture, and tourism, Shavkat Mirziyoyev stressed.

Shavkat Mirziyoyev also announced some changes in Tashkent's governance. 2026 has been declared the year of Swift Development and Growth of Household Incomes, and a special large-scale program is due to be adopted.
