On January 13, at an expanded meeting of the Security Council, the Chairman of the State Security Service (SSS) Bakhodir Kurbanov reported to the president Mirziyoyev on the progress of implementing the directives given at last year's meeting.
According to him, with an aim to increase the combat readiness of the armed forces, the SSS has organized systemic work to improve the combat readiness and training of state security units and bodies.
According to Bakhodir Kurbanov, as part of the implementation of modern digital solutions in the state border security system, 42% of the border line has been equipped with CCTV systems.
Furthermore, 1,117 km of fiber-optic communication lines have been laid.
The chief of the SSS also reported on the level of technical equipment of the border troops.
"The border troops are 98% equipped with armored vehicles, 86% with watercraft, 100% with weapons and ammunition, and 78% with electronic-optical equipment," Kurbanov stated.
Furthermore, State Security Service units were provided with modern unmanned aerial vehicles.
"A new special unit equipped with the Bayraktar unmanned aerial vehicle has been put on combat alert," he said (video).
According to him, the measures taken have increased the intensity and quality of combat training.
At a Security Council meeting, the president gave a directive to revise the Defense Doctrine and National Security Concept in light of changing modern risks and threats. He stated that the new Defense Doctrine should ensure that Uzbekistan maintains its non-membership status in any military blocs, relies on multilateral diplomacy, and develops a strategy based on high technology, military independence, and regional stability.
In November 2023, during a visit to a military unit in Surkhandarya, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev was shown a flight demonstration of the Turkish Bayraktar TB2 attack drone. The head of state underscored the "importance of using unmanned aerial vehicles" and discussed their production in Uzbekistan.
The Bayraktar TB2 ("Flagbearer") is a Turkish medium-altitude tactical strike UAV powered by an internal combustion engine and a pusher propeller. Carrying four guided munitions on its sling, the UAV can remain airborne for 12 to 24 hours. Its maximum control range is up to 150 km. Development and production are handled by the private company Baykar Makina, headed by Selçuk Bayraktar, the son-in-law of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
In January 2022, Uzbekistan launched production of the Lochin ("Falcon") unmanned aerial vehicles. The drones were developed by the research and production center under the State Defense Industry Committee. The drones can be used for both military and civilian purposes.
