A traffic police officer driving an official Chevrolet Tracker patrol car struck and killed a 75-year-old pedestrian in Samarkand, the Samarkand Province Traffic Safety Department said.
The accident occurred on July 21 at approximately 6:15 PM on Shabbod Street. Traffic safety officials reported that the officer hit the elderly woman, born in 1951, as she was crossing the street in an undesignated area.
However, video footage from one angle shows the pedestrian crossing the six-lane roadway and quickening her pace as she nears the median strip, which is when the vehicle strikes her.
Footage from a second angle reveals an uncontrolled crosswalk. The collision takes place right next to the zebra crossing; the speeding patrol car hits the woman and only comes to a halt several meters past the crosswalk. The impact launched the victim into the air before she fell onto the pavement.
The victim died at the scene from her injuries.
The Samarkand Prosecutor's Office has opened a criminal case under Part 2 of Article 266 of the Criminal Code (violation of traffic safety or vehicle operation rules resulting in death). An investigation is currently underway
