Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation Konghirotboy Sharipov and University of Tsukuba President Kyosuke Nagata have signed a cooperation agreement to establish a joint Uzbekistan–Japan university.
Under the agreement, the new university will train highly qualified specialists equipped with modern technical and management competencies, strengthen educational, scientific, and cultural cooperation between Uzbekistan and Japan, and further integrate the country's higher education system into the international academic community.
The founders will be Uzbekistan's Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Innovation and a consortium of Japanese universities coordinated by the University of Tsukuba. The University of Tsukuba will take part as the organization coordinating academic and educational processes as well as the consortium's activities.
Initially, the university will launch graduate programs in AI and digital transformation, as well as business administration. Doctoral and bachelor's programs are planned to follow in later stages. Instruction will be conducted in English and organized according to the Japanese higher education model. Short-term study programs in Japan, along with courses on the Japanese language and culture, will also be offered to students.
The Uzbek side will provide the university's campus and modern educational and research infrastructure, and will fund the work of faculty and administrative staff. The University of Tsukuba, for its part, will help develop curricula, coordinate the activities of the consortium of Japanese universities, recruit faculty, and organize academic exchange programs.
According to the plan, a preparatory office will begin operating in Tashkent starting September 2026. The first admissions to the master's programs are planned to take place starting from the 2028/2029 academic year.
