Today, the President Mirziyoyev signed a decree creating Tourism and Swift Tourism Sector Development Committee. The newly created committee is the legal successor to the Committee on Tourism under the Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection, and Climate Change.
The committee has been instructed to submit within two months proposals to the government to introduce visa-free and easing entry and stay procedures in Uzbekistan.
According to the decree, the main goals for tourism development by 2030 are:
- raising the tourism sector's contribution to the GDP from 3.5% to 7%;
- increasing the annual number of foreign tourists from 10 million to 20 million, including increasing the inflow of tourists with high purchasing power;
- increasing the annual volume of tourism service exports to over $6 billion;
- Improving transport links between Uzbekistan's tourist cities, increasing the number of domestic flights, and reducing travel times by at least threefold;
- doubling the number of 4- and 5-star hotels;
- creating a widely recognized Uzbekistan’s tourism brand.
A Tourism Development Strategy 2040 will be drafted with an aim to attract tourists, the following will be implemented in 2026-2028:
- 6.6-kilometer Samarkand Heritage Route project linking the most important historical sites in Samarkand;
- transforming the Ichan-Kala complex in Khiva into the world's only immersive and smart city-museum, harmonizing the lifestyle of the population, retail outlets, service points, and communication systems with the historical environment;
The plan also aims to attract world-renowned clothing brands to shopping and entertainment venues and create modern outlet centers in the national architectural style around the cities. In the first phase (by 2030), these will be in Tashkent, Samarkand, Bukhara, and Khiva, and in the second phase (starting in 2030), these will be in other populated areas with high tourism potential.
