The pressure to secure a spot in the Guinness World Records has ended in tragedy, exposing the dangerous consequences of forced student participation in mass state events.
A fatal traffic accident on June 23 left one student dead and several others hospitalized, casting a dark shadow over Andijan’s celebration as the "Cultural Capital of the Turkic World 2026."
The tragedy struck as a group of students from School No. 14 in the Asaka district were traveling to Andijan City to participate in a massive, synchronized performance of the traditional "Andijan Polka." The event successfully secured a Guinness World Record by mobilizing an astonishing 20,000 dancers simultaneously. However, behind the triumphant headlines lies a recurring, controversial reality: local schools were under intense bureaucratic pressure to supply bodies to meet the record-breaking quota.
According to the Andijan Province Traffic Safety Department, the Asaka District Public Education Department had organized a designated bus for the students. However, faced with rigid attendance mandates and chaotic logistics, a group of students took matters into their own hands, boarding a crowded Damas minivan to ensure they arrived on time. En route, their minivan collided violently with a ZIL cargo truck.
The students were rushed to a local hospital. Despite the desperate efforts of medical staff, one student succumbed to fatal injuries. While official reports state that the remaining students are now in stable condition, the emotional and psychological trauma has sent shockwaves through the community. Investigators from the Asaka District Internal Affairs Department are currently conducting an inquiry into the crash.
While regional officials initially attempted to control the narrative by framing the students' choice of transport as simple "willfulness," public grief has quickly turned into outrage. Critics point out that the obsession with regional prestige and mandatory attendance for state-sponsored spectacles directly creates unsafe environments, forcing minors into poorly coordinated transit situations.
