On the eve of Teachers Day on October 1, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev is now meeting with teachers New Uzbekistan University, the presidential press service said.
Subject Olympiads will also be organized for primary school pupils. Starting next year, fourth-graders who win the district stage of the Olympiad will receive a computer. Their teachers will be awarded 10 million soums for the district stage, 50 million for the provincial stage and 100 million for the national stage.
From the new school year, maths, computer science and natural sciences will be taught entirely in English in one class at each of 100 schools. Teachers involved in the project, as well as educators working with school-readiness groups, will receive a 100% salary supplement.
Quality index will be implemented in secondary education, the president said.
Schools will be sorted into categories based on the capacity of their teaching staff and their pupils' academic and personal development outcomes. If a leading school shares its experience with other schools and helps move them into a higher category, its teaching staff will receive a 30% supplement.
"Times are changing. Children's interests, outlook and the way they take in information are changing too. A teaching method that worked yesterday may not be enough today. That is why teachers must read regularly and keep working on themselves," the president said of teachers' qualifications.
The requirement for teachers to travel to the capital or a provincial center for a mandatory one-month course will be scrapped. It will be replaced by professional development vouchers.
Depending on their results in the qualification-category assessment, teachers will be able to take between 18 and 72 hours of training. They will choose the course and the training provider themselves.
The head of state said the change should turn professional development from a formality into a response to practical need.
