The analytical portal World Population Review has released its updated global rankings for per capita alcohol consumption.
According to the study, Kazakhstan ranks first among Central Asian nations, significantly outpacing its neighbors. Globally, Kazakhstan sits in the middle of the spectrum, sharing the 83rd spot with Cambodia and Zimbabwe, with an average annual consumption of 5.4 liters of pure alcohol per person.
Within Central Asia, Kazakhstan is the definitive leader. The regional breakdown shows:
- Kazakhstan: 5.4 liters (83rd)
- Kyrgyzstan: 3.9 liters (101st)
- Turkmenistan: 3.0 liters (119th)
- Uzbekistan: 2.1 liters (132nd)
- Tajikistan: 0.7 liters (154th)
The lowest consumption levels—approaching absolute zero at 0.1 liters per year—were recorded in several Muslim-majority countries, including Kuwait, Iran, Syria, and Pakistan.
Meanwhile, Romania claims the top spot globally for alcohol consumption, with a record-breaking 17.1 liters of pure alcohol consumed annually per person aged 15 and older.
