On May 1, at about 5:55 AM a water leak or spill-over occurred from the sixth picket wall of the Sardoba reservoir dam in Syr Darya province. As a result, water flooded thevillage of Kurgantepa in Sardoba district, the Ministry of Emergencies said in a statement.

Nearly 11.6 thousand residents of Kurghantepa, Dustlik and Yurtdosh villages, located next to the dam were evacuated to Mirzaabad district, the statement added.

At present, the evacuation of Abdualim makhalla in Akaltyn district has begun. It is also planned to evacuate Kuytosh, Ota Yurt and Birlik mahallas, which are under threat of flooding.

At the scene are present the Prime Minister Abdulla Aripov, the leadership of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, the National Guard and other organizations.

There is no information about the dead and injured, or the causes of the dam failure. While heavy rains occured on the eve in several provinces of Uzbekistan.

The construction of the reservoir was started in 2010 on the territory of the watercourse of the central network of South Mirzachul Canal and was completed in 2017. The hydraulic structure holds 922 million cubic meters of water.
