A new project aimed at developing container transport between Uzbekistan and Afghanistan has officially launched, according to a report from Temiryulkargo.
The company announced that it has initiated the process of exporting Uzbek-manufactured flour to Afghanistan using shipping containers. To encourage this shift, container transit tariffs have been adjusted to match the lower pricing usually reserved for conventional closed freight railcars.
As part of the project's initial rollout, loading and dispatching operations for the flour shipments bound for Afghanistan were successfully completed.
According to officials, using containers guarantees the integrity and security of the cargo by protecting it from external elements. It also accelerates loading and unloading procedures, enabling significantly faster delivery times to final destinations.
"Temiryulkargo" emphasized that this initiative will boost Uzbekistan's export capacity, expand multimodal logistics services toward Afghanistan, and ensure a more efficient utilization of international transport corridors.
Looking ahead, the company plans to gradually scale up container transit volumes toward Afghanistan and establish a schedule for regular container freight trains on this route.
This rollout follows a visit by a "Uzbekistan Railways" delegation to Mazar-i-Sharif, Afghanistan, on May 21. During that trip, an official opening ceremony was held for Port No. 5 in Mazar-i-Sharif, marking the completion of major construction and restoration work along the Hairatan–Mazar-i-Sharif railway line.
