During a government meeting on the nuclear energy projects on Friday, the President Shavkat Mirziyoyev gave a dricetibe to elaborate a project for a large-scale nuclear plant, the Director of the Atomic Energy Agency, Azim Akhmedkhadjaev told the Uzbekistan 24 TV channel.

According to him, a releavnt document has been signed with the Rosatom.“This means that it is necessary to study all the possibilities of connecting a large plant to our energy system. We will try to build a larger plant and implement a larger system as soon as possible,” he said.

In June, the Uzatom and Rosatom signed an agreement on the terms of a large-scale nuclear plant in Uzbekistan. The project involves two VVER-1000 power units (1 GW each) with the possibility of expanding to four. A joint working group has been set up to study the main aspects of the project, the cost estimates, and then make a decision.

Uzbekistan nuclear power plant

Uzbekistan and Russia signed an agreement on the nuclear power plant project back in 2018. The deal provided for cooperation in the design, construction in Uzbekistan, commissioning, operation and decommissioning of a nuclear power plant consisting of two power units based on a water-moderated power reactor according to a Russian design with an installed capacity of each power unit of up to 1.2 GW.

In May 2024, the parties decided to commence a small-scale SMR-based NPP. Changes were made to the intergovernmental agreement of 2018 - the clause on a large NPP with a capacity of each power unit of up to 1.2 GW remained and was supplemented with a clause on a small NPP of six reactors (now the project has been changed and the number of reactors have been reduced to two).

On March 24-25, Uzatom and Rosatom included in the agenda the possibility for implementing a large-scale nuclear power plant project.
