Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan have studied the seismic safety of potential sites for nuclear power plant projects, the press service of the Atomic Energy Agency (Uzatom) said.

The meeting with the delegation of Kazakhstan led by the Vice Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Zhomart Aliyev took place on Monday.

Uzbekistan was represented by the leadership and experts of Uzatom, the Directorate for the Construction of Nuclear Power Plants, the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Emergency Situations, the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Climate Change, the Tashkent branch of the National Research Nuclear University MEPhI, as well as UzGASHKLITI and Uzliti Engineering design institutes.

The Kazakh delegation was represented by the leadership and experts of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, the Atomic Energy Agency, the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Emergency Situations, and a number of other government agencies.

The parties reviewed key aspects of nuclear energy cooperation in focusing on safety, seismic stability and environmental issues.

"We need to meet more often, exchange experiences and open new horizons together - from energy to medicine, agriculture and water purification, where nuclear technologies can benefit our peoples," said Azim Akhmedkhadjaev, the Director of Uzatom.

The Uzbek officials spoke about the results of the implementation of international legal instruments in the field of nuclear and radiation safety.

They also focused on creation of a joint system for monitoring the radiation and environmental situation, which is aimed at enhancing cooperation in the field of radiation safety and data exchange between the countries.
