Construction and consulting contracts have been signed for wastewater treatment plants under two projects — Reconstruction and Construction of Wastewater Systems in the City of Shahrisabz and the Center of Kitob District and Construction of Wastewater Systems in Karmana District — the press service of Uzsuvtaminot reported.
The two projects have a combined value of $119 million, financed under a loan agreement between Uzbekistan and the French Development Agency (AFD) signed on March 25, 2022. In addition, the European Commission has allocated an $8.15 million grant through the French Development Agency to support the projects.
Officials said the funding will help not only build new infrastructure in the wastewater sector, but also bring service quality in line with modern international standards.
Construction contracts were awarded following two-stage tenders conducted in accordance with the French Development Agency's procurement guidelines.
Under the tender results, Turkiye's Alkatas Insaat ve Taahhut A.S. and Mesmer-East LLC were selected to develop the detailed design and carry out construction for the Shahrisabz package, while Alkatas Insaat ve Taahhut A.S. alone was selected for the Navoi package. Technical oversight of construction will be carried out by South Korea's DOHWA Engineering Co., Ltd. and France's SAFEGE S.A.S.
In Kashkadarya region, the project holds particular significance for the city of Shahrisabz and the center of Kitob district. Two wastewater treatment plants with a combined capacity of 53,000 cubic meters per day will be built in the area. The project also includes construction and reconstruction of 521.2 kilometers of wastewater networks and the installation of 10 pumping stations.
As a result, 240,400 residents across 51 neighborhoods will gain access to wastewater services.
"One of the most important aspects of this project is that it will introduce centralized wastewater service to the center of Kitob district for the first time. Currently, there is no sewage system in this area at all. Once the project is complete, 63,400 residents will gain access to wastewater services, bringing coverage to 81 percent," the statement said.
In Shahrisabz itself, the project aims to dramatically expand existing coverage. Wastewater service currently reaches just 8 percent of the city's population, or 19,600 residents. Once the project is complete, that figure will rise to 86 percent, or 177,000 residents.
A comprehensive wastewater system is also planned for Karmana district in Navoi region. The project there includes one wastewater treatment plant with a capacity of 9,800 cubic meters per day, 161 kilometers of wastewater networks, and five pumping stations.
As a result, 49,400 of the 54,900 residents living across 14 neighborhoods in Karmana district will gain access to wastewater services for the first time, bringing coverage in the area to 90 percent.
